Tekels Park

Sanctuary for Wildlife

Camberley, Surrey, England, GU15 – 2LF

to be Sold to

a Developer

Tekels Park is now being sold to a property development company by the Theosophical Society in England, who are showing an apparent indifference to the fate of the wildlife, that is in conflict with the  long tradition of compassion for animals within the Theosophical Movement.

For decades, volunteers have carried out the greater part of the conservation work at Tekels Park. These volunteers have come not only for the Theosophical Society but also from those who have attended the annual camps held at the park and individuals interested in conservation and animal welfare.

The rejuvenation of

the Tekels Park Pond

A big attraction at Tekels Park is the Pond on the terraces near the campsite. The pond is cement lined and about 30 feet in diameter. It has a shallow rim around the edge which deepens to about 2 feet at the centre.

Volunteers Working on the Tekels Park Pond 1995

In 1995 the pond needed to emptied of a great accumulation of leaves. The pond has no drainage pipe and the water was removed in buckets (400 in all) so as not to harm the frogs and newts, which were rescued and returned later to the pond.

Water loving plants were placed around the pond to soften the edges. These palnts were placed in baskets to control their growth.

Steps For Tekels Park Birds

Steps were placed at the edge of the pond to make it easier for birds to have a drinks or take a bath.

Water Fountain

A water fountain was placed in the middle of the pond to supply a trickle of fresh water if needed. This was donated by the volunteers.

Netting was made available to prevent the pond from filling up with leaves again.

Shelters for Tekels Park Fish

In the past, fish in the pond had been eaten by passing herons. New fish were provided by a well wisher and to help then survive, shelters were placed on the floor of the pond with a plastic heron standing guard to deter real herons. This strategy seem to have worked as there are still fish in the Tekels Park pond today. Other wildlife in the pond such as frogs and newts have also flourished.

This is just one of the Tekels Park conservation projects that have been undertaken over many decades. Like the others, the rejuvenation of the pond project is indicative of the commitment that the Theosophical Society in England had to conservation and animal welfare in the past.

The future of the Tekels Park pond after the developer takes over is uncertain, as is the future of the rest of the park. There has been no discussion of, or clear statement about, the future of the Tekels Park Wildlife from the Theosophical Society in England’s leadership.

The current indifference to the fate of the Tekels Park Wildlife has dismayed many in the Theosophical Movement and it has not gone unnoticed that the Diploma in Theosophy being offered by the Theosophical Society in England excludes the subject of Compassion for Animals.

Who Has Decided

To Dump Tekels Park ?

The whole deal is shrouded in so much secrecy that even the majority of the Theosophical Society’s actual card carrying members don’t appear to know what is happening but here are some contact points.

Please note that there is more than one Theosophical Society. Only the Theosophical Society with its headquarters at Gloucester Place, London is connected to Tekels Park. This is generally known as the Theosophical Society (Adyar) as its international headquarters are in Adyar, India.

The Theosophical Society administers the Tekels Park Estate through a limited company

Members of the Theosophical Society in England are at a loss to know why the leadership ignored professional advice in 2009 not to sell Tekels Park. Selling at such a bad time puts the Theosophical Society in England’s leadership in a very weak negotiating position. Nobody outside the leadership has seen the detailed financial information on which the decision to sell Tekels Park is based.
